A Practical Guide to the Development of Case Studies on Good Social Management Practice, Michael Barzelay and Juan Carlos Cortázar Velarde, Washington D.C., 2004
Since 2003, the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IADB) Inter-American Institute for Social Development (in Spanish, INDES) has been implementing an initiative to encourage the study of good social management practice in the region. To this end, they hosted a Workshop on Case Study Development, as an opportunity for providing methodological training for researchers. This Guide falls within the framework of this initiative, as it provides a global overview on the methodological and discussion framework surrounding the issue, based on a case study on the set-up of a participatory budgeting process in the district of Villa El Salvador in Lima, Peru, from 2000 to 2002. This proposal intends to be more than just a manual suggesting a number of strictly sequenced steps; it rather aims to guide decision making based on a methodological approach.
